O violin has no frets: your finger has to land in the right spot and your ear checks the tuning. That's why an app that listens to you play helps a lot: Dedilhado Vivo shows the finger and string for each note, the bow direction (⊓ down, V up) and tells you if the note was sharp or flat.
Where to start on the violin
- Get the bow ready. Tighten the hair to about 5 mm from the stick and apply rosin.
- Tune the strings. G, D, A and E. Tune the A first, with the app's tuner.
- Open strings with long bows. Keep the bow straight, parallel to the bridge, without pressing: the sound comes from the weight of your arm.
- Fingers 1, 2 and 3 on the A string. B, C♯ and D. Together with the D string, you get the D major scale.
- First songs. Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star and Ode to Joy in D, changing bow direction on every note.
Notes in 1st position on the violin
| String | Open | Finger 1 | Finger 2 | Finger 3 | Finger 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| G | G | A | B | C | D |
| D | D | E | F♯ | G | A |
| A | A | B | C♯ | D | E |
| E | E | F♯ | G♯ | A | B |
With a "low" 2nd finger (touching the 1st) you play C natural on the A string and F natural on the D string. The app shows you when to use each one.

Start violin for freeFrequently asked questions
Can you learn violin on your own?
You can start on your own with a good guide and something to check your tuning. The app's microphone does that and tells you if a note is sharp or flat. Lessons with a teacher help a lot with posture.
What is the first scale to learn on the violin?
D major, on the D and A strings, with fingers 1, 2 and 3. It's the most natural scale for the hand in 1st position.
What do ⊓ and V mean in violin sheet music?
⊓ is a down-bow (pull, from frog to tip) and V is an up-bow (push). The app shows the direction for each note.
Does the app have a violin tuner?
Yes, free, with the G, D, A and E strings and tips on when to use the fine tuner or the tuning peg.
